The 100th birthday anniversary of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj is on 8th February 2003. The man who led the nation Malaya into independence and later to become Malaysia.
The Malaysian Govt will
have a one month celebration of the Tunku's 100th birthday beginning 8th February to 8th of March, the New Straits Times reported today.
Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said that one of the main activities would be a tahlil after the zohor prayers at Masjid Negara on Saturday. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will be present together with some 3,000 people, including Cabinet Ministers, friends and family of the late Tengku. At State level, State mosques will hold the tahlil after the maghrib prayers.
Kadir told a Press conference at his ministry today after meeting leaders of different religious faiths:" We have always observed the Tengku's birthday, but this year it is extra special as it would be his 100th birthday. The Tengku was a leader who left behind a solid foundation for other leaders. The programmes organised this year are to study and be appreciative of his contributions and messages to the people."
He hoped schools would organise programmes to commemorate the occasion.
In conjunction with the Tengku's 100th birthday, a book titled Tengku: Pengorbanan dan Kemerdekaan (Tengku: Sacrifices and Independence) will also be launched. The book contains five memorable speeches delivered by the Tengku, including the proclamation of independence speech and his last speech as Umno chief at its general assembly on Jan 23, 1971.
A 20-minute VCD depicting his life from childhood through school, family life, political ventures, social and volunteer activities right to the moment he breathed his last will also be made available. It also features Malaya's struggle for independence and his role in freeing Malaya from the grasp of the British, along with the historical moments in his life.
A Malay-language essay-writing competition will be jointly organised by the National Archives of Malaysia and Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd to encourage students to research and study the late Tengku, apart from developing the spirit of patriotism among students.
A seminar titled 100 Years Remembering the Birth of Tengku Abdul Rahman Putra: The Father of Malaysia and Founder of Racial Unity will also be organised on Monday. Some of the prominent speakers at the seminar are Berita Publishing Sdn Bhd editor-in-chief Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Abdul Samad Idris and consultant psychiatrist Tan Sri Dr M. Mahadevan.
On Feb 28, a dinner organised by Yayasan Tengku Abdul Rahman to raise funds for needy students will be held. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Fauziah will grace the occasion.
On March 3, Pos Malaysia will launch a commemorative stamp in conjunction with the Tengku's wouldbe 100th birthday. Individual stamps can be pur-chased at 30 sen and 50 sen a piece and RM1 for two pieces. First-day covers will also be available.
